2011 Trevor Stuart’s Climb for Kid’s Sake – Day 1

Climb for Kid’s Sake Day 20: Last day and a party with the Sherpas!
We had rain and lightning all of last night in Namche. The sky was clear this morning though…thank goodness! We had breakfast first thing this morning (this photo of my group was taken in our favorite breakfast-bakery!) then headed back to Lukla where we’ll spend the night in anticipation of catching a flight to Kathmandu tomorrow. We decided to spend another night in Namche Bazaar. There are several people over the age of 60 with us on this trek and everyone agreed…it was a good excuse for us ALL to have an extra day of rest! Climb for Kid’s Sake Day 18: R&R in Namche Bazaar!
We decided to spend an extra day in Namche Bazaar rather than a night in Phakding to allow a number of people in our group to recuperate for another day. Suits me fine – this village is fantastic…especially the market! Today we tipped the yak herders and one of our sherpa guides because their time with our group is finished. Climb for Kid’s Sake Day 17: The trek home – Pheriche to Namche Bazaar
We trekked hard today to make it from Pherishe to Namche Bazaar. I have now had a hot shower and a shave and I’ve re-organized my gear. Climb for Kid’s Sake Day 16: The start of our quick descent
Unbelievable! It was so surreal to be at Everest Base Camp…to finally see it with my own eyes! Our guide was telling us that yesterday some Sherpas had to ascend to near the top of Everest to remove a frozen Russian climber from a fixed line. Apparently he successfully reached the summit then froze to death on the way down. He also told us that 4 weeks ago in Base camp he and a few other Sherpas... [Read more]

Today we visited Everest Base Camp (17,500 ft)! Today we got to see what the Everest climber’s experience when they are on the mountain for weeks at a time. Base Camp seems so out of place – a colorful camp in the middle of a barren, glacial habitat of boulders and ice in the middle of the upper Khumbu Glacier.
