Climb for Kid’s Sake Day 13: Khumbu Glacier
Today we walked up onto the Khumbu Glacier! The lateral moraine of this famous glacier is visible as we walk out of Pheriche. Check out this video of this windy glacier! We’re hiking only short distances now and very slowly. We can actually feel the air getting thinner! We had a tea break and lunch at Tukla.
In [...]
Climb for Kid’s Sake Day 12: Acclimatizing near the Tibet border
I am here in Pembouche camp and have been since yesterday. We are acclimatizing at 14,000 feet and head uphill for Lobouche (Low boo shay) tomorrow…very close to base camp!
Yesterday morning I was able to reach the school at noon and give them all the gifts. What an amazing time I had there! I was [...]
Climb for Kid’s Sake Day 11: Pangboche to Pheriche in the shadow of Ama Dablam!
I am healthy and strong…unbelievably strong this time! And I’m not finding anything too difficult, making for a fantastic trek in these unbelievable mountains. The amazing Ama Dablam rises above us. I can’t say enough about the stunning beauty of the Himalayas!
Before I left Lethbridge, I bought a bunch of stuff for the kids I [...]
Climb for Kid’s Sake Day 10: Khunde to Tangboche
Today we hiked from Khunde to Tengboche, where we visited the Tengboche Monastery, our second major monestary in the region. And both monestaries had a Rinpoche in residence! We’re all impressed with the beautiful culture surrounding us…it’s something you have to see to believe!
At Tangboche we finally got our first look at the famous Sargamatha [...]
Climb for Kid’s Sake Day 9: Thame Monastery
This morning we hiked a ridge above the town of Thame to visit the Thame Monastery. Perched high above the village, looking north toward Cho Oyu and the Nangpa La, this classic Himalayan monastery is home to a Rinpoche, or a reincarnate Lama.
In the afternoon we walked to Khunde, with a stop at the small but [...]
Climb for Kid’s Sake Day 8: Thame: Home of the amazing Sherpas
Today we hiked out to Thame. This walk took us away from the climbers headed for Everest Base Camp and toward the home of many of the most accomplished Sherpa Everest climbers. We spent the day exploring their village and learning more about these incredible people. I’ve included a description of three of the most [...]
Climb for Kid’s Sake Day 7: Hangin’ in Namche Bazaar
Today we acclimatized to the altitude, enjoying a full day in Namche. We woke up to amazing views of towering peaks all around us. Peaks that we couldn’t see yesterday due to low cloud cover and rain. Unfortunately, it still wasn’t clear enough to see Everest. :(
We had breakfast at 8 AM then made our [...]
Climb for Kid’s Sake Day 6: The AMAZING Namche Bazaar
This morning we hiked along the Dudh Kosi river (ironically, Dudh Kosi means Milk River, which is also the name of a small river near Lethbridge!) and into Sagarmantha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We meandered through many villages where I got awesome photos of the river, the deep valleys and the children. [...]
Climb for Kid’s Sake Day 5: One CRAZY landing then a hike to Phakding
I was so glad to leave Katmandu and all the unrest in favor of this beautiful Nepalese valley! We headed to the Katmandu airport early this morning, cleared customs and waited for the plane to Lukla. There were 5 airlines flying out the same morning and we waited on the tarmac about 20 minutes for [...]
Climb for Kid’s Sake Day 4: What a day in Kathmandu!
The plan today was to recover from jet lag by enjoying a relaxing tour of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal and its largest city with about 700,000 people. Hah! Relax! The boycotts involving no transportation and closed business continued today and tension is building between local people and the government parties. We made our way [...]
