Climb for Kid’s Sake Day 15: Base Camp at last!
May 16, 2010 by Trevor · Leave a Comment
Today we visited Everest Base Camp (17,500 ft)!
Today we got to see what the Everest climber’s experience when they are on the mountain for weeks at a time. Base Camp seems so out of place – a colorful camp in the middle of a barren, glacial habitat of boulders and ice in the middle of the upper Khumbu Glacier.
We finally got to see the famous Khumbu Icefall as we walk into Base Camp. The creaks and groans of the glacier and the roar of avalanches from the slopes around were evident throughout the day. I found this great video of the Khumbu Icefall filmed by a fellow trekker! At the end of the day, we returned (exhausted!) to our lodge at Gorak Shep with memories that will last a lifetime. We still have a 6-day trek back down to Kathmandu ahead of us, but it’s hard to believe it’s over after all that time and anticipation!
I’m climbing to Everest Base Camp to raise money and awareness for Big Brothers Big Sisters. If you’re able to show your support by donating some time or money to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lethbridge, visit their website or click on the blue become a sponsor button to the left.
