Climb for Kid’s Sake Day 16: The start of our quick descent
May 16, 2010 by Trevor · Leave a Comment
Unbelievable! It was so surreal to be at Everest Base Camp…to finally see it with my own eyes!
Our guide was telling us that yesterday some Sherpas had to ascend to near the top of Everest to remove a frozen Russian climber from a fixed line. Apparently he successfully reached the summit then froze to death on the way down. He also told us that 4 weeks ago in Base camp he and a few other Sherpas were making a heli pad and found someone’s arm. They had no idea who it belonged to! The choppers came then left base camp on Friday and they found a Sherpa who fell to his death 2 years ago! They flew the poor man to Pheriche so he could be returned him to his home village for a proper service. Oh! And I found someone’s femur bone and hip bone just as we entered base camp…gross!
One of the Sherpa guides for a Everest summit expedition fell and got badly hurt after a boulder cut his line – the expedition got cancelled. We met some of the people from this aborted expedition. Right now, Wally Berg (the owner of Berg Adventures) is leading a summit expedition. They are currently in Camp 4 waiting for the wind to die down and hope to summit tomorrow. I was excited to make Base Camp and can only imagine the anticipation those climbers are experiencing!
In base camp I did 15 clapping pushups and took about a million photos! Today we started the journey home, and I’m ready. We made a quick descent back down to Pheriche today and I swear I could actually feel the air getting thicker with each step! This made the descent feel pretty easy. I’m looking forward to a good night’s rest in the lodge tonight and to getting a little closer to home tomorrow!
