Climb for Kid’s Sake Day 18: R&R in Namche Bazaar!

May 18, 2010 by Trevor · Leave a Comment

We decided to spend an extra day in Namche Bazaar rather than a night in Phakding to allow a number of people in our group to recuperate for another day.  Suits me fine – this village is fantastic…especially the market!

NamcheMarket

Today we tipped the yak herders and one of our sherpa guides because their time with our group is finished. The rest will get their tips when we are in Lukla. The sherpa who left us today was the wife of the head sherpa who led us all the way. Our guide, Leila Berg, asked for her assistance to carry “grandma’s” backpack and to assist her along the steep mountainsides and across the swinging bridges.  She had never been to Base Camp before and needed Diamox (for altitude sickness) badly by the time we arrived in Lobuche, so I gave her six pills to tide her over.  I also lent her my gloves and her husband (Mingma) a tuque that I bought in Namche.  It felt good to help them since all they did during the entire climb was help us!

I enjoyed our day off in Namche. I went down to the bakery and had a coffee and a homemade piece of apple pie around 9:00 am then took more pictures and chatted with the Nepalese vendors.  At noon our group met again at the bakery and had lunch as a team. I had a triple-decker sandwich with onions on one layer, egg salad on the next layer and tomatoes plus a thin slice of yak cheese on the top layer. With homemade bread to boot!! So yummy! It was called a “club sandwich” so I expected chicken breast and bacon on it but oh well it was yummy!  At 2:00 we had our tipping party.  Tea will be at 5:00 and supper at 7:00.  Another 2 days of rest in Namche then we head for Lukla and the flight back to Kathmandu!

Please remember…the whole point of my climb to Everest Base Camp is to raise money and awareness for Big Brothers Big Sisters.  Please share this blog with your friends and family.  Show your support by donating some time or money to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lethbridge, visit their website or click on the blue become a sponsor button to the left.  Let’s do what we can to support this worthy cause!
