Climb for Kid’s Sake Day 8: Thame: Home of the amazing Sherpas

May 8, 2010 by Trevor · Leave a Comment

ThameToday we hiked out to Thame.  This walk took us away from the climbers headed for Everest Base Camp and toward the home of many of the most accomplished Sherpa Everest climbers.  We spent the day exploring their village and learning more about these incredible people.  I’ve included a description of three of the most famous of these Sherpas and some great links to more bios and videos.

ang_rita

Ang Rita, is nicknamed The Snow Leopard for successfully climbing Mount Everest ten times without using oxygen.  His last summit occurred 12 days following the deadliest disaster in Everest history!

tenzing-norgay-on-everest-summitTenzing Norgay is most famous for being one of the first climbers (along with Sir Edmund Hillary) to summit Mount Everest.  He was named one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century by Time Magazine.  Check out these two videos:  one is historical footage covering his climb with Edmund Hillary and the other is a really interesting bio.

apa-sherpa1_1822Apa Sherpa is nicknamed Super Sherpa.  He holds the record for reaching the summit of Mount Everest more times than any other person.  As of May 2009, he had climbed the mountain nineteen times.  Apa is trying to reach his 20th Mount Everest summit this month!  I found two great videos: one is an interview with Apa Sherpa and the other one is an interesting biography.

Tonight we will stay overnight in the family lodge of some good Sherpa friends of our hosts, Berg Adventures.

Remember…this climb is to raise money and awareness for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lethbridge.  Please remember to tell your friends, family and co-workers about this blog and encourage them to support this worthy cause.  Without the support of our great community, Big Brothers Big Sisters would not be able to offer the fantastic programs that add value to the lives of so many local children.  To learn more or to donate, please click on the blue become a sponsor button to the left or visit the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lethbridge website.
